Christophori Clavii Bambergensis ex Societate Jesu : in sphaeram Joannis de Sacro Bosco commentarius
Christoph Clavius's Latin commentary on Sacrobosco's Sphaera, printed at Lyon in 1602 for Jesuit college teaching of astronomy, in a copy once owned by John Adams. The 140 woodcuts are lettered geometric diagrams: circles crossed by chords, inscribed triangles, concentric spheres and arcs, offering designers stark black line figures against laid paper with faint show-through.
