Inside Out Library

A chronicle of the Church of S. Martin in Leicester, during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth : with some account of its minor altars and ancient guilds

North, Thomas, 1830-1884 · 1866 · London, [England] : Bell and Dadly · 9 pictures

Thomas North's 1866 parish history, published in London by Bell and Daldy, records the Church of S. Martin in Leicester through the Tudor reigns, drawing on churchwardens' accounts for antiquarians and local historians. The line engravings mix a medieval-style enthroned figure with kneeling donors and a set of outline ornaments — foliate cross, ivy and vine scrollwork, grotesque mask headpiece, and paired birds in a roundel — usable as tailpieces, borders, and heraldic-style motifs.
