Church embroidery, ancient and modern
A practical manual on ecclesiastical needlework by Anastasia Dolby, embroiderer to Queen Victoria, published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1867 for church workers and altar guilds. Its plates are line-drawn borders and orphrey bands of repeating roses, trefoils, sunflowers, diapered lattice and IHS monograms, ready to lift as rules, frames, repeat patterns or monogram devices.
