Civitas veri sive morvm
A Latin allegorical poem on Aristotle's Ethics by the Florentine Bartolommeo Del Bene, annotated by Théodore Marcile and engraved by Thomas de Leu, printed in Paris by the Drouart brothers in 1609 for learned readers of emblem literature. Alongside emblematic plates of the city of virtue, the pages carry woodcut initials packed with scrolling foliage, flower-filled urns and grotesque beasts, usable as drop caps, spot ornament or line-art borders.
