Clarissimi Viri D. Andreae Alciati Emblematum libellus : vigilanter recognitus, & ab ipso iam authore locupletatus
Andrea Alciato's Latin emblem book, issued by Christian Wechel in Paris in 1542 for humanist readers and scholars who paired mottoes, verses and pictures. The 111 small square woodcuts set winged Mercury, satyrs, hunters and travellers in outline landscapes of scrubby trees, hill towns and rocky banks, giving designers compact figure vignettes with clean unshaded backgrounds and thin contour line.
