Classical antiquities;
A nineteenth-century American student handbook of Greek and Roman antiquities, translated and edited by Nathan Welby Fiske from Johann Joachim Eschenburg's German manual and issued in Philadelphia by E. C. & J. Biddle in 1866 for college classrooms. The numbered plates crowd dozens of small wood-engraved outline figures onto a single page — gladiators and cavalry, altars and sacrifices, an amphitheatre plan, lamps, vases, standards, musical instruments, furniture and tools — giving designers a ready stock of isolated, key-referenced object drawings on plain grounds.
