The Clyde mystery : a study in forgeries and folklore
Andrew Lang's 1905 archaeological polemic, published in Glasgow by James MacLehose and Sons, weighs whether incised slate and stone objects from Dumbuck and other Clyde sites were prehistoric or modern forgeries, addressed to antiquaries and folklorists. The plates are wood-engraved and halftone views of small perforated stones, slate plaques and bone points, with scratched eyes, chevrons and hatching, useful as isolated silhouettes and mark-making textures.
