Collectanea antiqvitatvm in vrbe atqve agro Mogvntino repertarvm
An antiquarian catalogue of Roman inscriptions unearthed in and around Mainz, compiled by the humanist Johann Huttich and printed by Johann Schöffer in 1525 for scholars of Latin epigraphy. Each plate is a woodcut of a stone tablet or altar shown in crude perspective, its face filled with interpuncted Roman capitals inside hatched frames and moulded edges, offering designers ready-made inscription panels, block lettering and shadow-hatching conventions.
