A collection of emblemes, ancient and moderne : quickened vvith metricall illvstrations, both morall and divine, and disposed into lotteries, that instruction and good counsell may bee furthered by an honest and pleasant recreation
George Wither's English emblem book, printed in London by Augustine Matthewes for Richard Royston in 1635, pairs engraved plates by Crispijn van de Passe with verse mottoes and a lottery game for lay readers. The 214 circular engravings set emblems—Sisyphus, a crowned scepter, a winged globe pierced by a sword, a sun over a sapling—inside ring-shaped Latin motto borders, useful as roundel devices and landscape backdrops.
