George Wither's emblem book, printed in London in 1635 for Henry Taunton, pairs English verse with copperplate emblems that Crispijn van de Passe had engraved for Gabriel Rollenhagen's Nucleus emblematum, aimed at readers who used the plates as moral lessons and as a lottery game. Each image is a roundel with a Latin motto lettered around the rim: serpents on a staff, a sun with a human face, saplings, trumpets, ships and small landscapes, offering circular frames, curved lettering and compact line-engraved symbols.
