Colouration in animals and plants
A Victorian scientific treatise on animal and plant colouration, written by Alfred Tylor and completed by geologist Sydney B. J. Skertchly, printed in London in 1886 for naturalists and readers following debates on markings, mimicry and pattern. Its 48 plates mix chromolithographed butterflies in ochre, brown and cream with wood-engraved studies of big-cat faces built from dense parallel hatching, giving designers spotted and striped pattern fields, symmetrical wing layouts, and heads reduced to spot-and-line diagrams.
