Filippo Baldinucci's history of copperplate engraving and its masters, printed in Florence by Piero Matini in 1686 for collectors and scholars of prints. The pictures here are square woodcut initials — bold black letters set against foliage, tulips, acanthus scrolls and small grotesque faces — usable as drop caps, ornament tiles, or sources for hand-cut floral borders.
