Jean Calvin's Latin commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Romans, printed at Strasbourg by Wendelin Rihel in 1540 for theologians and students of scripture. The plates are small woodcut initial letters — N, C, I and others — set as white forms against dense diagonal and vertical hatching in square frames, usable as drop caps, monograms or hatched texture samples.
