A compleat system of magick; : or, The history of the black-art ...
Daniel Defoe's prose history of magic and the "black-art," printed in London in 1729 for a syndicate of booksellers and aimed at general readers curious about conjurers and occult lore. The plates here are typographic ornament rather than subject illustration: woodcut headpieces of scrolling acanthus, masks, flower swags and crossed wands, plus decorated initials framing letters with birds and foliage.
