Alexandre Guy Pingré's Cométographie, a two-part historical and theoretical treatise on comets printed by the Imprimerie royale in Paris in 1783 for astronomers and learned readers. The pictures here are letterpress ornaments — headpieces, tailpieces and vignettes cut in wood or metal — showing symmetrical foliate scrolls, urns, masks, lyres, an armillary globe, ribbons and an open book, usable as rules, dividers and small emblem spots.
