Cométographie ou Traité historique et théorique des comètes
Alexandre-Guy Pingré's Cométographie, a two-volume history and theory of comets printed in Paris in 1783 for astronomers and learned readers, in a copy associated with Louis XVI. The plates shown here are typographic ornament rather than astronomy: woodcut headpieces and tailpieces of scrolling acanthus, urns, ribbons, fleurs-de-lis, open books and small masked faces, usable as rules, dividers and chapter openers.
