The conquest of the air; the romance of aerial navigation
A popular history of ballooning and early airships written by John Alexander and issued in New York by the A. Wessels Company in 1902 for general readers following the aeronautics craze. Halftone photographs and line engravings show gas balloons rigged with netting and wicker cars, propeller-driven dirigibles, and ground crews on grass, giving designers period aircraft silhouettes, rope-mesh patterns, and hazy tonal skies.
