A French edition of Michael Sendivogius's alchemical treatise Novum lumen chymicum, printed in Paris by Jean d'Houry in 1669 for readers of Hermetic and chemical philosophy. The plates here are not diagrams but the printer's stock woodcut ornaments: headpieces and tailpieces built from acanthus scrolls, grotesque masks, paired birds holding palm branches over a cartouche, and a footed basket of fruit and grain, all in coarse black line suited to enlargement as borders, spot devices, or section breaks.
