Costume of the ancients
Thomas Hope's Costume of the Ancients, published in London in 1812 by W. Miller, is a plate book of Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Persian dress compiled from vases, statues and reliefs for painters, sculptors and stage designers. The plates are pure outline engravings without shading, showing single standing or seated figures in draped tunics, mantles and headdresses, with clean contour lines and repeating fold patterns useful for silhouettes, line-art figures and drapery reference.
