Costumes of Europe: with descriptions of the people, manners, and customs
A popular survey of European regional dress published by C.G. Henderson & Co. in Philadelphia in 1852, pairing short accounts of national manners and customs with wood-engraved plates for general American readers. The cuts show standing figures in pairs and small groups, in sheepskin cloaks, embroidered aprons, tricorne hats and laced boots, with hatching used for texture and little background beyond a scrap of ground, giving designers clean silhouettes of folk garments and small conversational groupings.
