Cours de peinture par principes
Roger de Piles's treatise on the principles of painting, printed in Paris by Jacques Estienne in 1708 for painters, connoisseurs and collectors. The pictures indexed here are letterpress ornaments rather than plates: woodcut headpieces and tailpieces showing baskets of flowers framed in acanthus scrolls, hatched backgrounds and small sprigged clusters, usable as period rules, spot ornaments and chapter dividers.
