The craftsman
Gustav Stickley's Arts and Crafts monthly, begun in 1901 in New York State, wrote for readers building and furnishing houses by hand — furniture makers, architects, metalworkers, bookbinders. Halftone photographs dominate: inglenooks and plain-plastered rooms, picture-hung parlours, and close studies of tooled leather covers with raised bands, giving designers craft ornament motifs and grainy period interior views.
