A critical examination of those two paintings on the cieling [sic] of the banqueting-house at Whitehall : in which architecture is introduced, so far as relates to the perspective : together with the discussion of a question, which has been the subject of debate among painters : written many years since, but now first published

Highmore, Joseph, 1692-1780 · 1754 · London : Printed for J. Nourse ... · 6 pictures

A 1754 London pamphlet by the painter Joseph Highmore, printed for J. Nourse, arguing over the perspective of Rubens's ceiling paintings in the Whitehall Banqueting House for an audience of artists and connoisseurs. The engraved plates combine lettered geometric diagrams with shaded arches, colonnades and rusticated gateways, offering ray-traced construction lines, vanishing-point fans and foreshortened classical architecture.
