Cross opening, games of draughts
A draughts manual on the Cross opening, written and self-published by Roland Edwin Bowen in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1878 for competitive checker players studying set positions. The plates are engraved board diagrams: hatched dark squares against blank light ones, framed by rules and the words WHITE and BLACK, with stacked cylindrical pieces drawn in shaded relief, useful as grid patterns, game-board motifs, and small isometric objects.
