Catalogue of an exhibition of early English portraits and landscapes lent
An exhibition catalogue issued by the Department of Fine Arts at Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, in 1917, listing early English portraits and landscapes lent from the John H. McFadden collection for gallery visitors and collectors. The plates are coarse halftone reproductions of oil paintings: half-length sitters in Regency gowns and dark coats against deep shadowed grounds, a boy seated in a garden, and a Constable-like lock scene with fence posts and massed trees, useful for soft-edged tonal masses, silhouette-heavy portrait vignettes, and grainy monochrome texture.
