The art of illuminating as practised in Europe from the earliest times
A chromolithographed manual on manuscript illumination by W. R. Tymms with text by M. D. Wyatt, issued by Day and Son in London in 1860 for Victorian designers, scribes and decorators copying medieval models. Plates gather initial letters, borders and panel ornament in red, blue, green and gold, from Celtic interlace and Romanesque foliage to beaked birds, dragons and penwork flourishes usable as drop caps or rules.
