Six centuries of painting

Davies, Randall · 1914 · London: T. C. & E. C. Jack · 48 pictures

A short popular survey of European painting from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, written by Randall Davies and published in London by T. C. & E. C. Jack in 1914 for general readers and students. The 48 plates are colour-process reproductions of gallery paintings, printed warm and dark so figures emerge from near-black grounds: seated mothers and children, a ruffed Dutch sitter, a boy with a candle, with visible craquelure and muddy halftone texture designers can use as aged-painting stock.
