Stories of the Flemish & Dutch artists, from the time of the Van Eycks to the end of the seventeenth century
A compilation by Victor Reynolds of anecdotes and short lives of Flemish and Dutch painters from the Van Eycks to the late seventeenth century, published for general readers in London and New York by Chatto & Windus and Duffield in 1908. The plates are captioned halftone reproductions of gallery paintings — hunting scuffles of dogs and boar, wooded river valleys, crowded figure groups — printed dark and contrasty, useful as ready-made tonal masses, animal-in-motion silhouettes and landscape backdrops.
