Recreation and the church
A 1917 manual by Herbert Wright Gates, published by the University of Chicago Press, arguing for organized recreation as church work and addressed to pastors and Sunday-school leaders. Halftone photographs record boys' camps with ridge tents, calisthenics on grass, team and club group portraits, parish reading rooms, and long tables at a church supper—useful for period clothing, institutional interiors, and crowd arrangement.
