The church and the people's play
A 1915 Pilgrim Press handbook by Henry Avery Atkinson arguing that American Protestant churches should organize recreation, games, and pageantry for their congregations and communities. Halftone photographs show outdoor group activities: crowds gathered in a field, children swinging bats and hanging birdhouses in trees, and costumed players performing against a hung sheet backdrop, useful as grainy period source material for amateur theatre, playground, and rural community scenes.
