The greater abbeys of England
A 1908 Chatto & Windus survey of England's monastic houses by the Benedictine historian Francis Aidan Gasquet, written for antiquarian and general readers and illustrated in colour by Warwick Goble. The plates are watercolour views of abbey ruins and church towers set in fields and woodland, with soft washed skies, olive and ochre foliage, grazing sheep and silhouetted tree masses—useful for muted landscape palettes, ruined Gothic arcading, and architecture seen at middle distance.
