The pavement masters of Siena (1369-1562)

Cust, Robert Henry Hobart, 1861-1940 · 1901 · London, G. Bell and Sons · 30 pictures

An art-historical study of the inlaid marble floor of Siena Cathedral by Robert Henry Hobart Cust, published in London by G. Bell and Sons in 1901 for collectors and students of Italian art. The plates reproduce the incised and intarsia pavement panels in stark black and white: crowded battle and biblical scenes drawn in white outline on black ground, framed by wide bands of Greek key, chevron, rosette and interlace ornament that can be lifted as ready-made borders and silhouette line work.
