Religious emblems : being a series of emblematic engravings, with written explanations, miscellaneous observations and religious reflections, designed to illustrate divine truth in accordance with the cardinal principles of Christianity
A Protestant emblem book compiled by William Holmes and engraver John Warner Barber, published in Providence by O.W. Potter in 1860 for American lay readers, pairing engraved emblems with scriptural explanations and reflections. The hand-coloured plates show allegorical scenes — a figure reaching toward a radiant cross, an angel lowering a lifeline to a drowning man beneath a walled city in the clouds — with heavy cross-hatched rocks, storm clouds and lightning that give designers stark silhouettes, ornamental display lettering, and ready-made moral tableaux.
