The cicerone: an art guide to painting in Italy for the use of travellers and students;

Burckhardt, Jacob, 1818-1897 · 1908 · New York, C. Scribner's Sons · 11 pictures

Jacob Burckhardt's guide to Italian painting, first published in German in 1855 and issued in this English edition by Scribner's in New York in 1908 for travellers and students touring Italy. The plates are coarse-screen halftones of Renaissance and Baroque canvases—entombments, bacchanals, nudes in landscape—with crushed blacks and chalky highlights useful for high-contrast figure groups and grainy texture.
