Confessions of a caricaturist
Oliver Herford's 1917 Scribner collection pairs short verse portraits with his own pen caricatures of American and British writers, actors and public men, aimed at a general magazine-reading audience. The drawings are loose pen-and-ink full-length figures with oversized heads, jutting noses and beards, rendered in quick contour and scribbled hatching against blank ground, useful for spot figures, checked and striped garment textures, and silhouette-driven character types.
