Sketching grounds
A 1909 special number of The Studio edited by Charles Holme, issued in London, Paris and New York for painters and amateur sketchers choosing landscape subjects. Colour plates reproduce watercolour and oil sketches of chalk cliffs, hillsides, birch copses and timber farm buildings, with soft-edged halftone grain, muted green-ochre palettes and loose brushwork useful as texture fills, muted colour references or atmospheric backgrounds.
