On drawing and painting
A teaching manual on drawing and painting by Denman Waldo Ross, Harvard's lecturer on design theory, published in Boston and New York by Houghton Mifflin in 1912 for art students and instructors. The plates are color-notation diagrams: narrow vertical panels running from white at top to black at bottom, filled with two-letter abbreviations for hues (Y, GB, RO, VR) arranged in stepped and paired sequences, useful as ready-made grid systems, value scales, and typographic pattern.
