Wanderings in the Roman campagna
An archaeological survey of the countryside around Rome, written by the Italian topographer Rodolfo Lanciani and issued in English by Houghton Mifflin in 1909 for travellers, classicists and antiquarians. The plates are high-contrast halftone photographs of overgrown masonry — rubble walls, vaulted niches, arched substructures, cypresses and olive trees on rough ground — useful for grainy stone textures, silhouetted tree shapes and ready-made dark-and-light ground patterns.
