Italian ceramic art : The maiolica pavement tiles of the fifteenth century
Henry Wallis's 1902 study for Bernard Quaritch of London catalogues fifteenth-century Italian maiolica pavement tiles for collectors, museum curators, and students of ceramic history. Plates reproduce square tile faces in brown ink with heavy hatched grounds and blunt cut outlines: heraldic shields, knotwork frames, stylised palmettes and six-petal rosettes, all built to tile edge-to-edge and usable as repeat units, borders, or standalone ornaments.
