Giorgio Vasari's biographies of Italian artists, first printed in 1550, here in Gaston du C. de Vere's English translation issued by Macmillan and the Medici Society in London, 1912, for collectors and students of Renaissance art. The plates reproduce early Italian panel paintings in halftone: enthroned Madonnas, Annunciations and crowded Nativities with gold haloes, patterned brocades and hillside backgrounds.
