Giorgio Vasari's sixteenth-century biographies of Italian painters, sculptors and architects, in Gaston du C. de Vere's English translation issued in London by Macmillan and the Medici Society in 1912 for collectors and art students. The plates are monochrome halftone photographs of frescoes, marble tombs, relief panels and altar paintings, giving designers heavily shadowed figure groups, draped bodies, and classical architectural framing with cornices, pilasters and inscribed tablets.
