European enamels

Cunynghame, Henry Hardinge Samuel, 1848-1935 · 1906 · London, Methuen & Co. · 4 pictures

A survey of enamelling in Europe from the Byzantine period onward, written by Henry Cunynghame, a British civil servant and amateur enameller, and published by Methuen in London in 1906 for collectors, museum visitors and working craftsmen. The plates reproduce painted Limoges triptychs with heraldic side panels, oval portrait medallions set in scrolled strapwork frames with grotesque masks, a gold-ground Madonna on a punched floral field, and robed figures in dense reds and blues, offering saturated colour schemes, frame shapes and border patterns.
