Specimens of staircases and handrails of the age of Queen Elizabeth

Weale, John, 1791-1862 · 1860 · Lonon · 17 pictures

A builder's and architect's plate book issued by John Weale in London in 1860, recording Elizabethan and Jacobean staircases, balustrades and handrails for craftsmen and restorers. Fine outline engravings give measured elevations, sections and details: turned and vase-shaped balusters, pierced strapwork panels, carved string brackets and newel finials, drawn in thin unshaded line against blank ground, ready to trace or recolour.
