A U.S. Bureau of the Census special report on telephone and telegraph service for 1902, with sections on municipal fire-alarm and police-patrol systems, compiled by William Mott Steuart with Thomas Commerford Martin and Arthur Vaughan Abbott and printed by the Government Printing Office in Washington in 1906 for statisticians, engineers, and the telephone trade. The plates are grey halftones of equipment photographed against blank grounds: oak wall sets opened to show batteries and coils, a candlestick desk transmitter, twin-gong polarized ringers, and tabletop fire-alarm registers, usable as isolated hardware silhouettes or period technical detail.
