Japan, a record in colour
An illustrated travel account of Japan by Australian-born painter-etcher Mortimer Menpes, written up by his daughter Dorothy and issued in London by A. & C. Black in 1901 for British armchair travellers and colour-plate collectors. The plates reproduce loose watercolour sketches of street stalls, temple gates, shop banners and crowds, useful for washy figure groups, lantern and signboard motifs, and muted crimson-and-grey palettes.
