A stained glass tour in Italy

Sherrill, Charles Hitchock, 1867- · 1913 · London, John Lane; New York, The John Lane Company; [etc., etc.] · 32 pictures

A traveller's guide to Italian stained glass by the American diplomat and writer Charles Hitchcock Sherrill, published in London and New York in 1913 for tourists and amateur students of medieval and Renaissance church art. The plates are halftone photographs of church interiors, looking down naves and into chapels, with vaulted ceilings, arcades of columns, frescoed walls and tracery windows rendered in heavy blacks and blown-out light, useful for architectural silhouettes, rib-vault and arcade patterns, and high-contrast interior backdrops.
