The history of signboards : from the earliest times to the present day
A survey of British shop and tavern signs by Jacob Larwood and John Camden Hotten, published in London in 1866 for antiquarians and general readers. Line plates group small woodcut-style devices against blank ground — griffins, heraldic beasts, kings, an elephant and castle, a royal oak, angels, trade objects — each captioned with street and date, usable as ready-made emblems and pictorial marks.
