The Bayeux tapestry elucidated
John Collingwood Bruce's antiquarian study of the Bayeux Tapestry, published in London by J.R. Smith in 1856 for antiquaries and students of Norman history. Plates reproduce the embroidery as coloured horizontal strips, two to a page, with Latin captions, mounted knights and spearmen in flat red, blue, green and ochre, and upper and lower bands of small beasts, fallen bodies and geometric ornament, giving designers ready-made narrative friezes and border repeats.
