A display of the naval flags of all nations
A hand-coloured flag chart issued at Liverpool in 1820, made as a reference sheet for merchant captains, shipping agents and port signal stations identifying vessels by nationality. The 104 plates show single flags flying from a plain staff, each rendered with hatched folds and flat vermilion, orange and pale blue washes over engraved outlines, giving designers ready-made saltires, cantons, stripes and small heraldic charges.
