Peter Guthrie Tait's 1876 Macmillan volume collects his Edinburgh lectures on energy, matter, heat and spectrum analysis for an educated general audience. The wood engravings mix optical-bench setups drawn in strict side elevation with dotted ray paths, black-and-white spectral band charts, and close studies of hands gripping tuning forks and rods — usable as diagram vocabulary, stark stripe patterns, and isolated instrument silhouettes.
